Objectives£º On December 7th 2007, a massive oil spill occurred in Tae-an gun, Chungcheugnamdo Province, South Korea. This journal aims to investigate the stress-related responses of the local residents in 7 different areas of Tae-an gun by measuring HRV.
Methods£º A total of 185 residents, who had taken part in any of 7 Disaster Management Support Centers at the 7 areas from 29th January to 19th February 2008, were included for the study. All participants were divided into four groups by the week they visited and assessed for heart rate variability(HRV). ¡¯HRV stress value ((Low-High)¡¿0.5)¡¯ was used to measure physiological stress index.
Results£º Among 185 participants who assessed HRV, 87.5%(n=162) were in risky group. And among them, 69.8%(n=129) were in high-risk group. Average HRV stress index showed no significant difference among four groups.
Conclusions£º These results mean that the stress-related symptoms after the disaster get chronic to need more expense and effort to solve them. It highlight the need for acute and appropriate intervention to reduce the stressrelated symptoms of the victims to prevent further serious psychiatric consequences.
